Information for New Members

Join us for our 4th of July concert at the Tabernacle!

The Island Community Chorus warmly welcomes new members.  We invite you to attend a “New Member Welcome Gathering,” where you will meet some singers in the chorus, hear about being a chorus member, and experience a brief sample rehearsal.  For those interested in joining us for our upcoming 2026 concerts, gatherings will be held:

  • WEDNESDAY, April 22 at 7:00pm at the First Congregational Church of West Tisbury
  • WEDNESDAY, April 29 at 7:00pm at the Edgartown Library

Chorus members are requested to pay a membership fee ($40.00 suggested) for each concert season.  The chorus rehearses from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm on Monday evenings at the Edgartown Public Library. We will have one or two extra “sectional” rehearsals on dates to be announced.

Singers may not miss more than 3 rehearsals in preparation for a concert, and the dress rehearsal is mandatory.

FAQs

Do I need to have background as a singer or previous choral experience to participate in the ICC?

No, all singers are welcome.  If you have not sung in a chorus or choir before, you may find singing in harmony from a printed score to be challenging at first, but with practice, most singers enjoy being valuable members of the chorus.

Do I need to read music?

Having some experience reading music is certainly of great value when singing in a chorus that works from choral scores and sings in parts, but you do not need to be an expert sight reader to participate successfully in the chorus.  We rehearse the music carefully, and for many of our more challenging pieces, we provide links to recordings on the ICC website that will help you practice your part at home.

Do I need to audition?

               No.

I’m not sure what voice part I am (soprano, alto, tenor or bass).  What should I do?

It is important to participate in the chorus section that is most comfortable for you.  The music director can help you figure out what section will work best for you by having you sing a few scales and vocal exercises.  This is informal, and is not an audition; it is just a process to help you find success as a chorus member.
